The process of psychotherapy is as unique to each individual as each individual is unique. Generally, however, we will follow a framework that we can refer to throughout.
We will start by scheduling a brief 10-15 minute phone conversation, free of charge, during which we can talk about what you are needing help with and whether the services I offer meet your particular needs. If we determine that it makes sense for us to meet, then we will discuss scheduling and availability, and establish the fee for your sessions. Otherwise, I can provide you with additional referrals if needed.
Before our first meeting I will email you a set of forms to fill out and bring with you to the first session. I approach the first few sessions—anywhere between one to five sessions, depending on the specifics of your situation—as a consultation or assessment period, whose aim is to establish a thorough and clear foundation for our work together.
We will then decide on treatment options and a general plan designed to address your specific concerns. Your particular life situation will help us determine the best way to proceed. I will make recommendations and enlist your feedback.
The number of sessions you will need—and how frequently we meet—depends on such factors as: the nature of your goals, the severity of your symptoms or how much distress you’re currently experiencing, how long you’ve been dealing with your situation, different aspects of your lifestyle, how much support you receive from family members and others close to you, and how quickly we are able to make progress, among other factors. We will collaborate to clearly address your needs and resources.
Periodically, we will review our work together and assess progress. When significant gains have been made we may either decide it is time to end our work together, or if you wish, begin working toward another area of growth. The decision to end or continue therapy is always yours to make. My ongoing goal is to empower you to trust that you can move through your life with a sense of clarity, discernment, flexibility and well-being.
